It’s a long weekend coming up for some of us, which means extra time to lie in bed (shoutout to the sedentary-preferred). Even if your days this weekend are filled with errands, brunch or sports, we’ve got your evenings covered with 5 of our go-to movies to watch while tucked into your linen-clad bed. Great on your own, with pals or that special someone.
For Jane The Virgin fans, it will come as no surprise that Gina Rodriguez is delightful in this girl-loses-boy-and-has-one-last-adventure-with-her-two-best-friends-before-moving-across-the-country comedy. Charming and relatable, it might have you reminiscing about your 20's and your friends being everything through good times and bad.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse
Yes, it's a cartoon and admittedly I also didn't expect much at first, but this movie was engaging from beginning to end. Great cast (did you recognize Nick from New Girl?) and story, ideal for all ages, whether you're a fan of the comics or not.
This documentary is an old favourite that I had to throw in, given my love of sushi and food documentaries. The enjoyment of this movie is simply marvelling at one man's perfection of his craft, without any need or desire to be the 'next big thing' or to build a global brand. It is beautifully shot and scored, and a nice counter balance if your week felt like a rat race. You also might be ordering Door Dash from bed after looking at all the delicious nigiri!
Have you ever watched anything with Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph in it that wasn't funny? Nope, me neither. They bring along a bunch of Saturday Night Live alum for the party, so be careful about snorting red wine out of your nose on to your linen sheets.
To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before
Some of us at Flax Sleep (okay, just me) have watched this movie more times that I care to admit. But in my defence, I am not alone according to Netflix. Based on the trilogy of young adult novels by Jenny Han, this movie about a high schooler who writes love letters to her crushes that inadvertently get mailed to them will have you re-living your mortifying teenage moments (again, just me?). Extra points for an Asian female lead and the movie being shot in our hometown.
Happy watching!
