With a simple philosophy of “making space feel good,” Laura Melling has curated her modern Strathcona townhome in the same cozy, welcoming and functional way that she does for her clients’ spaces. Since founding Laura Melling Studio in 2010, she and her team of talented women have been creating expressive and explorative environments that spark imagination. Keep reading for a peek into Laura’s “minimal urban cabin'' and see what makes her stunning house a home.

"I live in a modern townhome in Vancouver with my husband Quinn and our five year old daughter Grayson. We cherish our home, which was designed by talented Vancouver based architect Marianne Amodio. We love the soaring roofline, incredible natural light, white walls, concrete floors and especially the cozy gas fireplace in our living room. I have curated our furniture + art collection to tell the story of our values as a family - thoughtful, welcoming and calm.

Our dining room celebrates the incredible calibre of our Vancouver creative community. We have a custom ash dining table designed by Lock & Mortice paired with pale grey Muuto dining chairs from local shop Vancouver Special and a vibrant painting by artist Zoe Pawlak.

I love this kitchen! It is simple, functional and has heaps of storage because the millwork goes all the way to the ceiling. The open plan of our kitchen is wonderful for hosting friends + family and allows a seamless transition between food prep and hosting.

Each morning I wake up on this side of the bed with immense gratitude for the opportunity to do what I love. Both Quinn and I lead quite extroverted work lives, and our bedroom is our sanctuary - it’s cozy, tactile and calm. Our pebble grey linens from Flax Sleep are layered with a striped Moroccan blanket I brought back from an inspo trip. I designed the plywood bedside tables for the space which are made by local furniture studio Origins. Art is soft yet minimal - a natural birch ply square.

Grayson started kindergarten earlier this year, and she loves unicorns, jiu-jitsu and lego. Her room is joyful + creative, and yes I did help her to colour block her LEGO collection for this photo.

One of the reasons I fell in love with this home was the 500 sq.ft. garden level studio below our townhouse. I was in the process of looking for a new office space for my interior design business, so moving into a live/work property was the perfect solution. The studio is a warm minimal space that I share with my team. This vignette greets you as you enter the space  - an Ikea cabinet for sample storage is paired with custom wood peg rail by Kroft, team site kits by Herschel as well as my book and ceramic collection."
